Methyl acetate (CH₃COOCH₃)

Methyl acetate is an ester solvent known for its pleasant, faintly sweet odor, often compared to glue or model airplane cement. It is a clear, colorless, and highly flammable liquid. While miscible with most organic solvents, it has relatively low solubility in water. It is a powerful solvent effective against a wide range of resins, including cellulose acetate, polyvinyl acetate, acrylics, epoxies, and polyesters.
Noted for its low toxicity and ready biodegradability, methyl acetate is an environmentally favorable solvent. It is exempt from Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) regulations and is not classified as a hazardous air pollutant. These properties make it a viable, eco-friendly replacement for solvents like acetone in applications such as paints, coatings, metal surface cleaners, and adhesives.

Production
Industrially, methyl acetate is primarily manufactured through the esterification of acetic acid with methanol. It is also generated as a byproduct in other processes, such as the carbonylation of methanol for acetic acid production and in the manufacture of terephthalic acid and polyvinyl alcohol.
Applications
1. Paints and Coatings
Methyl acetate’s high evaporation rate makes it an ideal solvent for formulating fast-drying products. It is widely used in wood lacquers, and industrial, automotive, and marine coatings. Its VOC-exempt status has driven its increased adoption in compliant paint and coating systems. It is also highly effective as a solvent in nail polish formulations.
2. Surface Cleaners
The solvent’s hydrophobic nature and rapid drying characteristics make it excellent for use in surface cleaning, particularly for metal preparation before painting. Because it evaporates quickly and leaves no residue, it does not attract airborne contaminants. This hydrophobicity is especially valuable in marine applications and for cleaning moisture-sensitive equipment.
3. Other Applications
Methyl acetate serves as a key solvent in the production of fast-drying adhesives, where it dissolves rubber and resin components. Upon application, the solvent flashes off, causing the adhesive to set rapidly. Additionally, it is used in cosmetics and personal care products, including perfumes, nail polish, and nail polish removers.
